Today, Hampden Township received notice that it was awarded a $400,000 grant for improvements to the intersection of Carlisle Pike and Sporting Hill Road, pursuant to an application filed in 2018 with the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA).  Hampden Township will contribute an additional estimated $300,000 toward the total project cost.

The basis for the project design is from a comprehensive traffic study conducted throughout the West Shore region which recommended modifications to the intersection of the Carlisle Pike and Sporting Hill Road.  The anticipated scope of work associated with the project includes extending the right-turn lane on eastbound Carlisle Pike to create two lanes from the 581 overpass to the intersection of Sporting Hill Road.  The project also includes extending the westbound Carlisle Pike travel lane an additional 400 feet beyond the intersection with Sporting Hill Road.

Ultimately, this project will decrease congestion along that section of the Carlisle Pike, improve safety for motorists and pedestrians, and improve air quality by requiring motor vehicles to idle less while waiting to pass through the intersection.  Additional, benefits anticipated include improvements to pedestrian crosswalks and Americans with Disabilities Act curbcuts to comply with PennDOT requirements.

Al Bienstock, President of the Hampden Township Board of Commissioners, commented that “Senator Mike Regan quickly saw the importance of this project, and his support is greatly appreciated.  This state grant, along with a substantial investment by Hampden Township, will ensure an intersection that operates more efficiently and, more importantly, is safer for the public”.

Township Manager, Keith B. Metts, indicated that “the proposed improvements were incorporated into the Township’s Comprehensive Future Transportation Improvement Plan and will prove to be a significant improvement to this intersection once completed”.

Senator Regan indicated that he “commends Hampden Township for taking this important step in improving traffic congestion and improving safety at this very busy intersection.  I am glad the Commonwealth recognized the importance of this project and the relief that it will provide to the Carlisle Pike and Sporting Hill Road”.
