Hampden Township completes signalized intersection safety improvements along Wertzville Road

Safety Study Along Wertzville Road
Posted on 05/14/2021

Following up on a PennDOT led corridor safety study along the entire length of Wertzville Road, conducted in Hampden Township and other municipalities, Hampden applied for a state-funded grant to complete the recommended safety improvements at the signalized intersections in Hampden Township.  Wertzville Road, a state-owned road, has an estimated 8,000 vehicle trips per day along the entire corridor and approximately 12,000 trips per day in the area of the I-81 interchange.

While municipalities are the responsible owner of traffic signals throughout Pennsylvania, PennDOT regulates the design, permits and operations of all traffic signals in the Commonwealth.  Previously, signal modifications and improvements, approved by PennDOT, were completed at the intersection of Wertzville Road and Valley Road/Technology Parkway.

The most recent signal modifications were completed at Wertzville Road’s intersection with Lamb’s Gap Road, I-81 northbound ramp and Orr’s Bridge Road.  Upon the completion of Penn State Health’s traffic improvements, the intersections of Wertzville Road and Good Hope Road and I-81 southbound will also be upgraded.  These signal modifications will provide PennDOT approved safety enhancements to all signalized intersections along Wertzville Road in Hampden Township.

While drivers will clearly notice some of the safety enhancements, such as the overhead “signal ahead warning sign” while traveling eastbound on Wertzville toward the intersection with Lamb’s Gap Road, other safety features will blend in with the existing signal masts and utilize new technology like Advanced Dilemma Zone Detection.   Advanced Dilemma Zone Detection enhances safety at signalized intersections by modifying traffic control signal timing to reduce the number of drivers that may have difficulty deciding whether to stop or proceed during a yellow signal phase thereby reducing the number of motorists running red lights.
