BURGLARS CAUGHT -- BURGLARS ON THE LOOSE

As you may know from recent news reports, burglars suspected of many of the thefts in Hampden Township and nearby communities -- on both the East and West Shores -- were apprehended by Lower Paxton Township police.  Hampden's Police Department worked closely with Lower Paxton and Swatara Township along with other municipal law enforcement officials, Sheriffs' Departments, Pennsylvania State Police and District Attorneys in this matter.  All of those dedicated public servants deserve kudos for a job well done.

But while we take a momentary sigh of relief, we must remain vigilant -- these are not the only perpetrators who have targeted our communities. Hampden Police Chief Harry Clay, Jr. says there should be no letup in immediately reporting suspicious behavior to the Department.  Residents who notice suspicious activity should immediately contact the police by calling 911 or 238-9676.  Any delays in notifying the Department make it more difficult to catch the thieves.

Hampden Township burglary victims were notified by phone of the arrests.  It will take some time for all of the stolen items to be inventoried and for claims to be processed.

Protect Yourself and Your Property

Some things you can do to protect yourself and your property:

1. If you are going to be away for a few days, ask neighbors to watch your home and keep an eye out for unknown individuals. Stop mail and newspaper deliveries or ask neighbors to take them in until you return.  Let your neighbors know, but also advise them who may have permission to be in the house tending to things and provide vehicular information for those parties.

2. Set timers to turn lights on during evening hours (preferably timers with variable on/off time capabilities so burglars can't see a set pattern).  Also have timers in house for lights that are normally lighted during dusk and nighttime hours.

3. It is the time of year for solicitors/peddlers to walk the neighborhoods seeking business for home repairs (windows, siding, roofs, etc.) and other services. If they come to your door, ask them to show their state ID number and Hampden solicitors/peddlers permit. If they can't produce both, after closing the door, call the Police Department (761-2609) to report the incident. It will be helpful if you can describe the individual(s). If you see a vehicle, try to note the license plate.

4. Keep doors/screen doors and garage doors locked when you are not able to see who might have access (i.e., if you are working in the backyard, basement, etc.).

5. Report suspicious activity to the police no matter how minor it may seem to be.  (Dial 911 or 238-9676 for county dispatch after 5pm.)

6. Let police know you are away as there is valuable information that is needed.

7. Photograph/digitally record and do so with a measuring device for jewelry and other valuables (documents model and serial numbers).  Keep the recording media in a safe location.  Record not only serial numbers of currency but some of the other numbers located on the front of the bills.  Being able to produce this information will aid the police in not only locating the items but quite possibly developing a suspect in the case.  Consider engraving valuables with your Driver’s License number.
