    CRIME PREVENTION

Crime Prevention is nothing more than minimizing the opportunity for a "crime" to occur. Protecting your property and dwelling is PRIMARILY YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. The Hampden Township Police Department can assist the Residents with their preventive measures with information on doors, locks, windows, and glass.  We also provide information on alarms, exterior design (lighting, landscaping, shrubbery, etc.), and "common sense" tips on protecting your residence and its' property.

The Police Department has a certified Crime Prevention Officer. Call Corporal Snyder at (717) 761-2609 to learn all about Neighborhood Watch and Operation Identification.

    IMPORTANT TIPS

    1.  If you are going to be away for a few days, ask neighbors to watch your home and keep an eye out for unknown individuals. Stop mail and newspaper deliveries or ask neighbors to take them in until you return. Let your neighbors know, but also advise them who may have permission to be in the house tending to things and provide vehicular information for those parties.

    2.  Set timers to turn lights on during evening hours (preferably timers with variable on/off time capabilities so burglars can't see a set pattern). Also have timers in house for lights that are normally lighted during dusk and night time hours.

    3. It is the time of year for solicitors/peddlers to walk the neighborhoods seeking business for home repairs (windows, siding, roofs, etc.) and other services. If they come to your door, ask them to show their state ID number and Hampden solicitors/peddlers permit. If they can't produce both, after closing the door, call the Police Department (761-2609) to report the incident. It will be helpful if you can describe the individual(s). If you see a vehicle, try to note the license plate.

    4.  Keep doors/screen doors and garage doors locked when you are not able to see who might have access (i.e., if you are working in the backyard, basement, etc.).

    5.  Keep lawns mowed. In the winter, keep sidewalks and driveways cleared.

    6.  Report suspicious activity to the police no matter how minor it may seem to be. (Dial 911 or 238-9676 for county dispatch after 5pm.)

    7.  Let police know you are away as there is valuable information that is needed.

    8.  Photograph/digitally record and do so with a measuring device for jewelry and other valuables (document make, model and serial numbers). Keep the recording media in a safe location. Record not only serial numbers of currency but some of the other numbers located on the front of the bills. Being able to produce this information will aid the police in not only locating the items but quite possibly developing a suspect in the case.

    9.  Proper locks on entrance ways and the securing of windows is important in preventing perpetrator(s) from targeting your residence.

    10.  A good alarm system is also an option to protect your home. Installation of a wireless camera system that allows you to view your home while not there is a bonus, but make sure it is recorded off site (if possible). Check with your insurance carrier to see if you qualify for a discount.

    11.  Allowing view obstruction of doors and windows with shrubs/trees/and lattice work, allows perpetrator(s) to work virtually free of being observed by anyone.
